Conference on Emerging Zoonotic Parasitic Infections, AP & TS Chapter

The state chapter conducted its first conference and workshop on 11-12 November 2022 at the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences- Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women at Tirupati. The theme of the conference was “Emerging Zoonotic Parasitic Infections”.

The Workshop was conducted on 11 November at the Department of Parasitology, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University. The Resource persons were Dr P Malakondaiah, Professor and Head, and Dr Deepthi, assistant professor, Dept of Veterinary Parasitology. It was attended by 30 delegates (the maximum number restricted for the workshop) and it was in the form of a microscopic slide and specimen presentation. Various parasites of zoonotic importance like trypanosomes, schistosomes, babesia, sarcocystis, etc were shown to the participants.

The conference proper was held on 12 November 2022 at the Medical Education Hall at the premises of the Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women. It was attended by 50 registered delegates and about 20 invited senior faculty from the institute and other medical colleges. The inauguration ceremony started at 0930 AM with Prof B Vengamma, Director-cum-Vice Chancellor of SVIMS University presiding over the programme. Prof SC Parija, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry was the chief guest. The registrar of the university Prof Sreedhar Babu, Principal of Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women, Prof Sharan B Singh, and Prof Abhijit Chaudhury, President of the state chapter, were the other members present during the inauguration. The lighting of the lamp was followed by prayer. After a brief introduction by the state chapter president, Prof B. Vengamma gave the inaugural speech stressing the importance of parasitology as a subspecialty of microbiology. This was followed by the speech by Prof SC Parija who introduced the scope and vision of the Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology.

The inaugural ceremony was followed by a Book Launch from 10 AM to 10.30 AM. The Director-cum-Vice Chancellor, Prof B Vengamma formally released the book “Textbook of Parasitic Zoonoses” edited by Prof SC Parija and Prof Abhijit Chaudhury, and published by Springer. Prof Abhijit Chaudhury, the co-editor first outlined the salient features of the book, followed by a short introduction by Dr Bhavik Sawhney, Senior Editor, Biomedicine, Springer. Prof SC Parija, Editor, described the genesis of the book and how the idea was conceived. This was then followed by the actual book release by Prof Vengamma followed by her note of congratulations to the editors and the contributors. The editor and co-editor presented her with a signed copy of the book.

In the pre-lunch scientific session that followed, eminent speakers from the state and other parts of India delivered lectures on the theme of emerging parasitic diseases. The speakers included Prof SC Parija; Prof Sumeeta Khurana from Dept of Parasitology, PGIMER, Chandigarh; Prof VC Rayulu from SV Veterinary University, Tirupati; and Prof K Nagaraj from SVIMS, Tirupati. Certificates and mementos were presented to the speakers and the chairpersons.

The post-lunch session featured eight oral presentations from the delegates from various parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The three best papers were given prizes. The closing ceremony witnessed the distribution of certificates, books, and prizes to the delegates. The conference ended at 05.00 PM with a vote of thanks.
